At Northern Play Therapy, our therapists are highly qualified professionals with specialized training in trauma therapy for children and youth. All therapists are registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) and are permitted to provide psychotherapy services.

Additionally, all of our therapists have received further training and supervision to support their ongoing development and to provide the best possible service to our clients. If you’re looking for specific qualifications or experience, or would like to know more about an individual therapist, please feel free to reach out to us. We’re happy to discuss your unique needs and connect you with the right therapist for your child.

A typical counselling session at Northern Play Therapy lasts for about 45-50 minutes. However, the duration may vary depending on the specific needs and goals of the client.

Play therapy is a therapeutic approach designed to help children express their feelings, thoughts, and experiences through play. Since children often find it difficult to articulate their emotions verbally, play therapy allows them to communicate and process their experiences in a safe and supportive environment.

In play therapy, a trained therapist uses various play techniques—such as toys, games, and creative activities—to facilitate communication and help children explore their feelings. This process enables children to:

  • Express Emotions: Through play, children can express emotions they may not fully understand or articulate, helping them to process complex feelings.
  • Develop Coping Skills: Play therapy teaches children healthy coping mechanisms for managing anxiety, anger, and other challenging emotions.
  • Improve Relationships: The therapy can enhance a child’s ability to form healthy relationships with peers and caregivers by fostering communication and emotional understanding.
  • Heal from Trauma: For children who have experienced trauma, play therapy provides a safe space to process and work through their experiences, promoting healing and resilience.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a specialized therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences. Developed by Francine Shapiro, EMDR is based on the idea that traumatic memories can become "stuck" in the brain, leading to emotional distress, anxiety, and other psychological challenges.

During EMDR therapy, a trained therapist guides the client through a structured process that involves:

  1. Bilateral Stimulation: The therapist facilitates bilateral stimulation, often through guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory cues. This process helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories, reducing their emotional charge.
  2. Targeting Distressing Memories: Clients identify specific traumatic memories or distressing experiences they want to address. The therapist helps them connect with these memories while also providing support.
  3. Reprocessing and Integration: As the client engages with the memory, the therapist assists them in processing the emotions and beliefs associated with the experience. This can lead to new insights, emotional healing, and a sense of empowerment.

EMDR therapy has been shown to be effective for individuals of all ages, including children and adolescents, who are struggling with trauma, anxiety, depression, and other related issues. By reprocessing traumatic memories, EMDR helps individuals move towards a more adaptive and positive understanding of their experiences, promoting emotional well-being and resilience.

Signs that your child may benefit from therapy include persistent changes in behavior, emotional outbursts, withdrawal from activities, difficulty in school, or issues stemming from trauma. If you have concerns about your child’s emotional well-being, it’s best to consult with a professional.

During a therapy session, your child will engage in activities such as play, art, or talking, depending on their age and comfort level. The therapist will create a safe environment, encouraging your child to express themselves freely while guiding them through their emotional challenges.

The duration of therapy varies depending on your child’s unique needs and goals. Some children may benefit from a few sessions, while others may require more extended support. The therapist will regularly assess progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

Yes, we offer virtual therapy sessions to ensure that families can access our services from the comfort of their homes. This allows us to reach more children and families in need, regardless of location.

Many insurance plans provide coverage for psychotherapy services. We recommend checking with your insurance provider to understand your specific coverage options. We can provide you with invoices for reimbursement purposes. Most of our therapists are registered with NIHB and the Victim Quick Response Program for funding.

For the first session, you may want to bring any relevant documentation or information about your child’s history, such as previous assessments or reports. Most importantly, come with an open mind and a willingness to discuss your child’s needs.
