our services

At Northern Play Therapy, we provide specialized mental health care for children, youth, and families. Our therapists integrate evidence-based approaches such as play therapy, EMDR, CBT, DBT, expressive arts, and attachment-focused methods. We tailor each treatment plan to meet the unique needs of every child and family.

children

Play is a child’s natural language, and play therapy allows children to express emotions, build coping skills, and process difficult experiences in a safe way. Our therapists use a variety of play-based and arts-based methods to help children:

  • Manage big feelings such as anxiety, sadness, or anger

  • Heal from trauma and stressful life experiences

  • Improve emotional regulation and impulse control

  • Strengthen relationships with caregivers

youth & Teen

Adolescence brings new challenges — from identity and self-esteem to stress, peer relationships, and mental health struggles. We offer supportive, creative, and evidence-based therapy for youth, including:

  • CBT and DBT strategies for coping and emotion regulation

  • Expressive arts and talk therapy to process feelings

  • EMDR for trauma and anxiety

  • Support for school stress, relationships, and family dynamics

families & caregivers

families & caregivers

We believe children heal best when caregivers are included in the process. That’s why we offer parent–child therapy, caregiver coaching, and family support. These sessions focus on:

  • Strengthening attachment and parent–child relationships

  • Supporting caregivers with tools and strategies for daily challenges

  • Providing age-appropriate ways to talk about trauma, loss, or family changes

  • Enhancing communication and connection at home

specialized approaches

play based therapy

Play is the natural language of children. Through play therapy, children use toys, games, and creative activities to communicate feelings and experiences that are too complex to put into words. Play therapy creates a safe distance where children can process fears, worries, or past events while still feeling in control. Over time, play allows children to build coping skills, develop emotional awareness, and strengthen self-confidence.

expressive arts therapy

Art, music, movement, and storytelling are powerful ways for children and youth to explore their inner world. Expressive arts therapy uses creativity to encourage self-expression, reduce stress, and promote healing. This approach is especially effective for children who may struggle with traditional talk therapy — it gives them a voice through colour, rhythm, or story. Arts-based methods also strengthen the parent–child bond when families create together, making therapy a collaborative and joyful process.

parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT)

PCIT is a structured approach that strengthens the bond between caregivers and children while also improving behaviour and communication. In PCIT, parents are coached in real time to use positive, supportive strategies with their child. This helps caregivers feel more confident and children feel more secure, while reducing conflict and building stronger family relationships.

trauma and attachment focused therapy

Trauma can disrupt a child’s sense of safety and attachment. Our therapists use gentle, relationship-focused strategies to help children feel secure, rebuild trust, and strengthen their connection with caregivers. This includes using play, storytelling, and attachment-based activities that repair ruptures and create new experiences of safety within relationships.

eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR)

EMDR is a highly researched and effective therapy for trauma, anxiety, and distressing memories. It helps the brain reprocess difficult experiences so they no longer feel overwhelming. For children, EMDR is adapted with creativity — using drawings, stories, or playful bilateral activities such as tapping or passing a ball. This makes the process gentle, safe, and developmentally appropriate, while still reducing the emotional “charge” of painful memories. Learn more from EMDR Canada →

cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

CBT helps children recognize unhelpful thoughts and replace them with more balanced, helpful ones. While adults may use worksheets or journaling, children learn best through play, stories, and hands-on activities. Our therapists adapt CBT into fun and creative strategies — using board games, role-play, art, and storytelling — so children can practice new ways of thinking in ways that feel natural and memorable. This playful adaptation makes CBT more effective for kids than a traditional “sit-down and write” approach.

dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT)

DBT builds important life skills such as managing big emotions, calming the body, improving communication, and practicing mindfulness. With children and youth, DBT is never about lectures or worksheets — instead, we bring it to life through engaging activities, role-play, art, and games. By weaving DBT skills into playful experiences, children practice regulating emotions in real time and gain tools they can use at home, at school, and with friends.
